In the 1950’s and 1960’s especially, there was this vicarious attitude that you could use all this marvelous new mechanism science to cure every problem that had ever plagued humanity, and among some people, there was a big push to use psychiatry to cure various social ills, in which the circumstance was depicted in the movie A Clockwork Orange.
The predecessor, the parental force, the one who has gone through a phase of existence but currently not in synchronize or compassionate with their adolescent offspring considered it more humane for teenager to treated in such way, and there was the possibility that it could have turned out to be more effective.
It was a very particular sort of 1950’s liberalism that led to this attitude. You have to have a certain trust in science and an idealistic perspective on humanity as a whole, but a lot of the people who believed this tended to enforce conformity.
